BOSS Spotlight Feature: Dr. Josie Augustin

Dr. Josie Augustin graduated with her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Nova Southeastern University and is a licensed psychologist in the state of Florida. She conducts neuropsychological evaluations and provides therapy/coaching services in her community. Her ethnic minority-related research efforts extend from her dissertation: “Youn Ede Lòt”: Help-Seeking Among Haitians.”

1. What were some obstacles that you faced in the beginning process of starting your business or career? The greatest obstacles were my lack of knowledge and low self-confidence. In school, they didn’t teach us much about the business side of psychology. I had to learn by doing my own research, taking classes, and seeking advice from my mentors. Even after I obtained the knowledge, I still lacked the confidence to branch out with my sister into our own private practice. We had to adopt the Nike slogan: “Just do it.” Then, The Mental Health Sistas was born!

2. What inspired you to break into your particular industry? I became interested in psychology during the end of my junior year of high school after taking a career test that suggested it was a great field for me. As I completed college, I was intrigued and stunned by everything psychology covered, from research to testing to therapy and so on. I just knew it was the right field for me and something so necessary for our minority communities because so many of us are unaware of the resources that are out there for mental health and education.

3. How do you balance your personal and professional life or have you been able to find a balance? It’s been a challenge! Initially, I struggled to find that balance. I found myself not getting much sleep at all. However, these days, I actually set a specific time to stop working for the day, and I abide by that. I also set aside a specific day for self-care where I only focus on myself and make sure I’m in a good place to serve my clients.

4. What is an inspirational quote that you live by? My motto throughout every stage of life is Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

5. Who were some influential people or mentors that helped or encouraged you along the way? My family was undoubtedly the most influential in my success. They encouraged me to no end, even when I felt like quitting school at times. They reminded me that I could do it whenever I doubted my abilities.

6. What are your "must-haves" to keep your career or business going strong? I need to pray ALL THE TIME. It helps me maintain my sanity. I also need to constantly remind myself of my mission, what I seek to accomplish. While my methods may change, I ultimately want to stay true to my overarching goal of improving mental health in minority communities.

7. What is your definition of a BOSS? Someone who walks in the face of obstacles and adversity and still holds her head high. Someone who doesn’t give up despite repeated failure. She still has the courage to try again.

8. Provide us with two words that describe you? Clinical Psychologist
