But if we embrace an adaptability mindset, we can more effectively flex in the face of change and challenges. Adaptability is a power-skill that enables us to be intentionally flexible, changing in an effort t...

The Power of Self Leadership By Kimberly A. Ferguson

Image
In August of 2019, I rolled out the “Ready, Set, Lead” workshop series during LEAD WEEK in Queens, NY at a leadership conference for New York Edge. I introduced the series there because the conference planners and I recognized that self-leadership was an important topic; and in our combined experiences, we saw the incredible power and impact that true Self-Leadership has in the workplace. What I didn’t realize was that the introduction of this curriculum would create a ‘movement’ of sorts in the workplaces that I visited; that it would shift the thinking and the approach of employees and leaders; that it would encourage people to not only evaluate themselves, but to regulate behaviors that were having a detrimental impact on individual and team productivity. So, what is self-leadership? Self-leadership is intentionally developing a sense of who you are, your competencies, and direction. It is about your ability to strategically lead yourself; and involves managing your emotions, yo...

Working from a “home office” has become the new normal for many of us. While it certainly has its perks (flexibility, independence, etc.), it does come with a number of new challenges. One challenge that I’m seeing employees face more and more, is staying relevant in this changing workplace. Over the past few weeks, this question has come up repeatedly: How can employees stand up and stand out while working from home? Staying relevant while working from home is simple. Just remember the 5 P’s of Getting Noticed: Presence, Positivity, Persistence, Promotion, and Progress Presence : One of my favorite strategies is staying present through the practice of mindfulness. Social Isolation is not easy and can have a toll on our emotional state, and an impact on our interactions with others. Practicing mindfulness allows us to be “consciously present”, pay attention to what is happening at the moment, and manage our feelings and emotions. Positivity : Our attitudes matter. No matter how gr...

In the workplace, respect is critical to job satisfaction and overall success.  In a study released in April 2016, the Society for Human Resource Management identified respectful treatment of employees as the most important factor contributing to job satisfaction.  That’s big! Accountability is not solely on the employer. As an employee, you are responsible for taking appropriate action to establish respect. Of course, we cannot force respect; however, we can do our part. In Aretha Franklin style, let’s break down what R-E-S-P-E-C-T really means. Using the acronym below, we’ll explore 7 keys to building respectful relationships – to increase job satisfaction and build a winning brand. R --Remember, attitude is everything:  You can change the trajectory of your life with a shift in outlook and change of attitude. Instead of focusing on the negative, find value in every interaction. A method that I find helpful is thought-awareness, in which I pay close attention to...
