We Are Inspired By This BOSS Organization: Harlem United Community AIDS Center

Founded in 1988, Harlem United Community AIDS Center, www.harlemunited.org, works to improve the lives of people living with or threatened by HIV/AIDS through comprehensive prevention, housing, and healthcare services. Our mission is to provide one hundred percent access to care and to obtain zero disparity in health outcomes caused by racial, gender, and economic barriers.

With more than 300 staff and an enduring commitment to quality patient-centered, community-based care, we serve more than 12,000 New Yorkers annually. Our clients are among the most medically underserved and economically disenfranchised individuals living with HIV/AIDS. In addition to HIV/AIDS, many suffer from hepatitis C, diabetes, extreme poverty, substance use, and mental illness.

A true one-stop shop, Harlem United provides supportive housing, healthcare, and HIV prevention services to Central and East Harlem. We have more than 500 units of congregate and scatter site housing, with unique programs including family support, mental health, treatment adherence, and job readiness/placement assistance.

We offer primary medical care and adult day health center services.  Our East Harlem programs deliver services in Spanish to meet the linguistic needs of the community.  In addition, Harlem United has been designated a federally qualified health center for the homeless, and offers primary medical care and behavioral health services to homeless persons regardless of HIV status.

To curb the transmission of HIV/AIDS and other STIs, Harlem United provides integrated HIV/STI and viral hepatitis screening with immediate access to healthcare, as well as syringe exchange and harm-reduction programs. Since 2007, we provided the most comprehensive array of services for men of color who have sex with men, including group, individual and community level HIV prevention interventions, job readiness, and Internet-based education and support for safer sex practices.

Harlem United’s proven expertise in healthcare service delivery and grassroots advocacy has made us a valued partner to our peers and to local, state and federal health care agencies. We provide our clients with quality care and are committed to advancing responsive policies that facilitate greater access to testing, healthcare, and treatment for all New Yorkers.
