Staying Focused By Marita Kinney
There are countless
distractions throughout the day but staying focused is possible. We all have busy
lives and sometimes we look crazy trying to juggle so many task. Multi-tasking
is second
nature for most women, but it can also become our worse enemy. It can
cause you to stretch yourself so thin, making it difficult to notice any
progress in your efforts. We can find ourselves working, working, working, but
nothing has changed other than your stress level. Yes! As your stress
increases, you adapt it as your new normal. Stress becomes your way of life and
so do your bad habits of creating distractions.
After coaching many clients
about their career goals, lack of focus is among the most common road blocks
that stand in their path to success. Have you ever wondered how some people
accomplish so much with their time? I use to ask myself that question all the
time. Then it dawned on me that all of us have 24 hours in a day. It wasn’t
that I was wasting my time, I was merely mismanaging it. That means that I was
doing a little bit of a lot every day. Gosh was I wrong. I had no idea that I’d
actually be more productive if I focused on one task at a time. That should
have been a no brainer right? Not when it comes to women who are used to
multitasking incorrectly. If you give your energy and undivided attention to
one task at a time, see if you notice a difference in what you’re able to
accomplish every day. Of course I’m not suggesting that you discontinue doing
multiple things. However it wouldn’t hurt to do one of those things for an
extended period of time.
If
you’re struggling with staying focused here are some things that I’d encouraged
you to try:
- Plan Your Day- In order to do this properly, ask yourself, “What are the things that I absolutely must accomplish in order to feel satisfied and productive?”
- Prioritize- Consider putting the things that you dread doing at the top of your list of things to do. Often times this eliminates or decreases procrastination.
- Main Focus- Decide what you’d like to spend the majority of your time doing. Instead of multitasking all things. Choose one thing or project to give your undivided attention towards. Consider spending 2-4 hours on your main focus.
- Limit Distractions- Distractions are everywhere, however becoming disciplined in this area could potentially free up several hours of your day. Email, personal phone calls, Facebook, television, and other guilty pleasures could be costing you crucial time. And for most of us, time is money.
The strategies mentioned may not be for your line of
work, but is intended to be used as a guide in implementing whatever is useful
for your particular purpose. Stay focused and you will be on your way to
becoming the best you.
