BOSS Spotlight Feature: Dr. Mekia Troy
Dr. Mekia Troy is the Athletic Director at Creekside High School in Fairburn, GA. She is the longest-tenured AD in the Fulton County district and has served her school community for 19 years in roles as a teacher, department chair, and head coach prior to leading its athletic department.
What were some obstacles that you faced in the beginning process of starting your business or career? Early in my career, I felt that I did not have a blueprint to follow. I needed professional development to grow and become a more transformational leader than the transactional leadership style that I was accustomed to seeing in athletics. Finding and joining quality professional organizations helped tremendously.
What inspired you to break into your particular industry? I was inspired to become an athletic director by a mentor who strongly believed I would be a good replacement for him as he would be leaving the position. Once I considered it, I realized the impact I could have on the school and community as an advocate for our student-athletes.
How do you balance your personal and professional life or have you been able to find a balance? Balance is challenging, but I face it by prioritizing what’s most important and intentionally taking time to clock out. Even if the break is brief, it is still necessary. I’ve had to learn that self-care is not selfish.
What is an inspirational quote that you live by? I live by the scripture Mark 9:23 that says all things are possible for one who believes.
Who were some influential people or mentors that helped or encouraged you along the way? My parents have always been my greatest influence. They have been examples in their personal and professional lives of the work ethic, integrity, and respect that I strive to display.
What are your "must-haves" to keep your career or business going strong? Flexibility is a must as things around us constantly change. You have to adapt as necessary and be resilient in order to be effective. The Notes app on my phone is also a definite must-have for me! With multiple activities going on at once, I have to get thoughts out of my head throughout the day. Then I’m able to attack them by priority.
What is your definition of a BOSS? A boss is a decision-maker with a clear perspective and direction to consistently lead in a manner that gets the most out of everyone involved with completing a task.
