Canceling Your To-Do List: The Art of Doing Nothing by Karneisha Christian-Stewart
Our best selves require rest too. In order to be our creative, fully present, and our über successful selves, we must carve out time to be the absolute opposite of her. Though this is more easily said than done, it is essential to our physical and mental well-being. Culturally, we equate success with being booked and busy. Failure is synonymous with laziness. We have been socially programmed to squeeze every drop of juice from our day.
I often poke fun at one of my business "Besties" that she "works to work". Of course, we need to continue to strive to achieve our goals and to be profitable however, this lifestyle or "work style" is not sustainable. There are absolute levels to this shift too. For some, a "do-nothing" day comes when we are completely exhausted and mentally drained. Having more Self-Care days can alleviate this. Maybe it's reading or journaling for you. Perhaps listening to your favorite playlist while lounging on the sofa in your favorite sweats. Sometimes we could just use a great "power nap"!
I won't end with another list of ideas and tasks to do, as it is counterproductive to our goal: To embrace doing nothing as a means of creating more balance in our lives. Simply put, add a "Do Nothing Day" to your calendar now!
