BOSS Spotlight Feature: Qiana Tuner
1. What were some obstacles that you faced in the beginning process of starting your business or career?
One obstacle I faced, in the beginning, was not knowing who to turn to for advice in this industry. I didn’t know anyone that was planning wedding and events so a lot of what I know I learned on my own or by trial and error. Also, had I known business coaching was a necessity, I would have done it sooner in my career! Business coaching was a true game-changer for my business.
2. What inspired you to break into your industry?
I am a huge people person and love to see people happy. When are people the happiest? At parties and weddings. Becoming a wedding and events planner, I was able to combine my love for people and special celebrations into an awesome career.
3. How do you balance your personal and professional life, or have you been able to find a balance?
At times it's difficult to find the balance because I want to please my clients and spend time with my family. I find that setting boundaries is the answer for me. I set boundaries with clients and setting firm hours for business is the key. My family deserves my attention just as much as my clients do so it’s important for me to build time into my schedule for them.
4. What is an inspirational quote that you live by?
“Go confidently in the directions of your dreams! Live the life you have imagined.” – Henry David Thoreau
5. Who were some influential people or mentors that helped or encouraged you along the way?
Big named people have inspired me along the way. I have also had the opportunity to work closely and have some coaching from these people. Their influence on me and my business have been tremendous! Preston Bailey of, Kathy Romero of Kathy Romero Events, Tawanda Sims of Elite Events by Tawanda, and Akeshi Akinseye of Kesh Events.
6. What are your "must-haves" to keep your career or business going strong?
The must-haves to keeping this career going are:
Strong relationships with other industry professionals – no one can make it in this industry alone.
Never becoming complacent – always be willing to learn something new.
7. What is your definition of a BOSS?
My definition of a boss is one that can manage career, family, friends and not have to sacrifice either one to make the other happy. A Boss makes power moves that benefit her, but provide opportunities for others. A Boss does all of these things and look and feel fierce doing it!
8. Provide us with two words that describe you? “Wedding Slayer!”
