4 Essential Tips to Staying Healthy and Hydrated This Summer by LaTrice Moore

Summer is in full swing! And while we all love to soak up the sun and spend lazy afternoons by the pool, it’s also more important than ever to stay hydrated and take care of yourself as the temperatures rise.

Here are a few of our favorite tips to make sure you’re taking in enough water as the weather heats up!

Tip #1: Drink Plenty of Water Throughout the Day
There’s no single formula that dictates how much water we need every day. The amount you need will vary depending on your age, how much you exercise, the temperature, and other factors.

But most healthcare experts agree that the key to staying hydrated is the same for everyone – drink water throughout the day. Have a glass or two when you get up, after you exercise, when you eat and when you go to bed.

Your body can only absorb so much water at a time, so chugging 8 glasses of water after dinner won’t be as beneficial as sipping it throughout the day.

Tip #2: Choose Hydrating Foods and Beverages
Not all your hydration needs to come from drinking water. Lots of foods – especially watermelon, cucumbers, tomatoes, and grapes – have high water content. That means they’re a great way to hydrate and snack too.

And if you find water a little boring, you can easily make it more interesting without losing its hydrating properties. Try adding berries, lemon slices, or cucumber to a pitcher in the fridge for an instant flavor boost. Or try adding seltzer water or herbal teas into your daily rotation for some variety.

Tip #3: Avoid Too Much Alcohol and Caffeine
When it comes to hydration, not all drinks are created equal. Beverages like beer, wine, coffee, soda, sweet tea, and energy drinks all contain ingredients that can dehydrate you.

But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ever have them. Just enjoy your favorites in moderation and try to rehydrate after you do indulge.

Tip #4: Learn the Signs of Dehydration
As the weather heats up, dehydration and heat sickness become more common. Dry skin, chapped lips, fatigue, and headaches are all common signs of dehydration. If you’re severely dehydrated, you might experience fainting, a rapid heartbeat, and muscle cramps.

If your symptoms are mild, get someplace cool and rehydrate with electrolytes. If your symptoms are severe and not subsiding, call 911 immediately.
