What were some obstacles that you faced in the beginning process of starting your business or career?
The biggest obstacle or challenge we faced early on was understanding how to use the various social media platforms to engage our intended audience. We are still “figuring” it out while trying to find the best company to help us in the areas of digital marketing and branding.

What inspired you to break into your industry?
I grew up in the packaging industry literally! I was 13 years old when my father started our family business. Over the last 35 years, I watched him build a successful multi-million corporation. I joined the company nearly 20 years ago so it logically made sense to use my talent and the gained experience rather than venture into my old career or start a brand new one. As the pandemic evolved and many businesses found themselves reevaluating their business models and forced to pivot to online engagement with customers and colleagues, I discovered there was a great void in the e-commerce small business sector for branded and custom boxes, hence the birth of box it UP designs.

How do you balance your personal and professional life, or have you been able to find a balance?
I haven’t completely mastered a true “balanced” life between my professional and personal life. It’s an area in my life that I’m constantly working on but I have definitely made greater strives over the last few years on focusing on permitting myself to completely be free from work or technology. The biggest example of this “balanced” life happened this year. For the very first time, I did not take my laptop with me on vacation. That was a huge step for me and I must say it felt great to simply “unplug” and be “free” from work or any other distractions!

What is an inspirational quote that you live by?
“I never lose, I either win or learn.” Nelson Mandela

Who were some influential people or mentors that helped or encouraged you along the way?
I would definitely say my father has been my biggest inspiration since I was a teen. Watching him become the first African-American to own a corrugated packaging plant in the southeast, then continue to build a successful multi-million dollar corporation still going after 35 years is simply amazing! But I would be remiss if I didn’t give thanks to my “Sisters in Christ”, my best friend of 25 years, and my dearest line sisters who poured into me, encouraged me, and celebrated every win with me as if it was their personal victory! My dad was able to perform the heavy lifting and lay the foundation that drives me to this day, however, my “Sistah Friends” have been the mortar that keeps me all the way together and helps to empower me that I can do exactly what I set my mind to in this white male-dominated field, something my dad just simply was unable to do organically as a man.

What are your "must-haves" to keep your career or business going strong?
I have two “must-haves” to keep my business going strong. I must have a “To-Do” list. This keeps me on track and allows me to see progress even when it’s minor. I learned early on that I needed to be able to cross out or check off what I have finished or accomplished so I can celebrate the little wins! My other “must-have” is to review my finances weekly. Being aware of your finances, what’s going in, and what’s going out is key to a fiscally sound business!

What is your definition of a BOSS?
A true BOSS is a person who is authentically themselves, fearless, and powerful but never afraid to show vulnerability and ask for help when help is needed.

Provide us with two words that describe you. Brand Ambassador
