BOSS Spotlight Feature: Beverly Iseghohi

Beverly Iseghohi, a multi-sport coach, uses her legal training to advocate for drowning prevention and healthy living in black communities. She is CEO and founder of SBR4Life, a fitness organization partnering with leading academic institutions to offer an innovative approach to community-centered physical activity, advancing a research action agenda.

1. What were some obstacles that you faced in the beginning process of starting your business or career? Given our unique business model, our training program requires instructors and trainers who have both hard and soft skills as well as a fierce commitment to improving social performance. Competing for talent has posed and continues to pose a major challenge for us.

2. What inspired you to break into your industry? Community health has been and continues to be a focal point for me. As a trained strategist, I can use my skills to develop ambassadors who promote lifestyle change in Black communities. This can lead to the adoption of physical activity – preferably, swim, bike and run/walk. And ultimately, this can help to reduce the number of black people who drown. After years of developing issue campaigns, I know how to develop cross-training mission ambassadors/influencers. Equally important, I know the power of partnership. The business model we’ve created is built on collaboration between the public and private sector. Building a movement of change agents is what inspires me.

3. How do you balance your personal and professional life, or have you been able to find a balance?  Fortunately, the work I do is all about whole-body wellness. Taking care of myself is a “requirement” of the job. I balance self-care with managing the physical activity and well-being of others. However, “balance” is still a work in progress.

4. What is an inspirational quote that you live by? Be a producer; not a consumer.

5. Who were some influential people or mentors that helped or encouraged you along the way? My mother demonstrated what it means to be an independent woman; my dad taught me self-efficacy; my uncle introduced me to entrepreneurship, one of my stand-out swim coaches prepared me to teach others how to become comfortable in deep water and my real estate law professor showed me how to develop my own voice as an advocate.

6. What are your "must-haves" to keep your career or business going strong? Access to information and belief in self.

7. What is your definition of a BOSS? One who exploits her personal power by planning and taking necessary steps to realize her goals. She’s a good steward of resources and she’s a mentor to others.

8. Provide us with two words that describe you? Change agent.
