What were some obstacles that you faced in the beginning process of starting your business or career? I have experienced a few obstacles throughout my business journey. My first business failed because I could not keep up with the demands of my full-time job, while also managing the day-to-day tasks of my business. Now that I have transitioned into a different role, I have more of a work-life balance and can dedicate more time to building my business. Another obstacle that I faced was the need to patent my product. Being inexperienced with this process, I hired a patent attorney who assisted me with getting a design patent for my flagship item, the Sconnet.
What inspired you to break into your industry? My passion for haircare inspired me to break into this industry. I started my natural hair journey in 2014 and I was obsessed, but I noticed that something was missing from the natural hair accessory market. When I would go to sleep at night, I would put my hair in a ponytail to preserve my curls. I would wrap a long rectangular scarf around the base of the ponytail and I would have a separate bonnet that I would place over the hair extending from the ponytail. It was then that I had an "aha" moment. Why couldn't these two items be combined to form one scarf/bonnet or a Sconnet? I shared my idea with my mom and my sister, who thought it was a great idea.
How do you balance your personal and professional life, or have you been able to find a balance? I balance my personal and professional life by creating boundaries and dedicating time to specific things. My planner and phone keep me on track throughout the day so I never miss important events or tasks, whether they are personal or professional.
What is an inspirational quote that you live by? “Embrace every moment.” Every win/obstacle contains a lesson. Living in the moment and taking away something from each encounter and experience makes me even more grateful that I am on this journey.
Who is one influential person and/or mentor that has helped or encouraged you along the way? This person would be my sister, Laniece. She is my sounding board and the person I bounce my ideas off of. She constantly encourages me to move forward even when I experience obstacles that make me want to give up.
What are your "must-haves" to keep your career or business going strong? My must-haves are my to-do list/planner, intentional self-care time, and my weekly educational readings/webcasts.
What is your definition of a BOSS? A BOSS is a go-getter who dreams big, plans accordingly, and executes to the best of their ability.
