What were some obstacles that you faced in the beginning process of starting
your business or career? As a young physician, you’re expected to follow the designated course and either work at an academic center or join a private practice. Neither of these fits into the
type of care I wanted to provide to patients. So initially it was difficult to even know where to begin since this type of practice; a Gastroenterologist specializing in the very niche space of weight, nutrition, and bariatric endoscopy; had never been executed. So, it took a lot of research and betting on my expertise to start!

What inspired you to break into your industry?
Throughout my training, I saw countless patients who all had the same medical problems and complaints with the underlying commonality of excess weight and poor nutrition via the standard American diet. In our current medical system, there isn’t sufficient time to address these issues in visits. I knew I could make a difference, but it would have to shake up the norm, and that’s how Gut Theory
was born.

How do you balance your personal and professional life, or have you been
able to find a balance?
I’ve found that balance looks different in different weeks in entrepreneurship. Each day may not be perfectly well-balanced, but I try very hard to balance it out over the month. I have learned that I have to take time for myself to be the best version of myself for my patients.

What is an inspirational quote that you live by?
What’s for you will be… It helps me to get over when certain plans do go accordingly, to allow me to keep my head up and find another route.

Who were some influential people or mentors that helped or encouraged you
along the way?
I have soo many mentors! My parents and close friends are always
there to provide a listening ear, and encouragement and have become advisors. To
other women gastroenterologists (Dr. Andrea Reid, Dr. Violeta Popov, Dr. Octavia
Pickett-Blakely to name a few) who have forged paths in their niches to the
bariatric endoscopists (Dr. Christopher Thomas, Dr. Gontrand Lopez-Nava, Dr
Steven Batash) showed me this was possible.

What are your must-haves to keep your career or business going strong?
I must have a strong, hard-working, creative, and dedicated staff to help me to
provide the top-quality care I envision and allow us to continue to level up year after year!

What is your definition of a BOSS?
A Boss is someone who has a big dream and the audacity to go after it each and
every day!
