BOSS Spotlight Feature: Tina Fletcher, Ph.D.
Tina Fletcher holds a BA (University of Arkansas), EdM (Harvard University), and a Ph.D. (University of Pennsylvania). Her experience includes interning with the U.S. Senate and First Lady Michelle Obama and serving as a teacher, fundraiser, and education consultant. She has been named a Visionary Arkansan and Top 40 Under 40.
What were some obstacles that you faced in the beginning process of starting your business or career?
As a first-generation college student who grew up in the rural South, most of the initial obstacles I faced were related to a lack of knowledge about all of the intricate requirements of starting a business: LLC paperwork, taxes, hiring, etc. Fortunately, with the right people in my corner, I’ve learned some helpful yet hard lessons along the way. And while it hasn’t been a perfect journey, it’s been one full of valuable learning opportunities – all of which I am grateful for.
What inspired you to break into your industry?
The year before I started my company, I read in a newspaper article that Black students in Arkansas were scoring an average of 16.9 on the ACT. It alarmed me and I wanted to do something about it. Seven years later and my company is still committed to helping Black students and teachers in the Arkansas Delta and it’s great to see our work have an impact on the communities we serve.
How do you balance your personal and professional life, or have you been able to find a balance?
As a new mom, I’ve had to learn some tough lessons recently regarding balance. Fortunately, I’m at an age where I am aware of the value of being present when I’m with my daughter which means the time I do have to focus on my professional work, I am locked in and avoid distractions. Yes, my balance is a little forced; however, it is working well thus far.
What is an inspirational quote that you live by?

Who were some influential people or mentors that helped or encouraged you along the way?
I have always been inspired by Black women who have defied all odds to get to where they are. From Oprah and Rosalind Brewer to Mellody Hobson and Serena Williams, I love using their stories of success as inspiration for my own personal goals. I also have several mentors who have played a very vital role in the current success of my company including Dr. Wanda Newell and soon-to-be Dr. Monica McMurray. I am so grateful for them.
What are your "must-haves" to keep your career or business going strong?
A strong team and great leadership skills are two foundational must-haves that have kept FES going for 7 years. I am proud of the team we’ve built and am always excited to share that we have not experienced any turnover.
What is your definition of a BOSS?
Bold. Optimistic. Strategic. Secure.
