BOSS Spotlight Feature: Renita Bryant

Renita Bryant is a 5x author, board member, Sundial Brands fellow, and leader of two
Atlanta-based firms: SightsSet, a consumer insights strategy consultancy, and Mynd
Matters, a hybrid publishing company. She received a B.S. in Business Administration and MBA from Florida A&M University and has two executive education certifications in Entrepreneurship from Dartmouth College.

What were some obstacles that you faced in the beginning process of starting your business or career?
My business partner left SightsSet within its first year, leaving me to manage everything alone. It worked out because I got to build and create something impactful that still exists today. Separately, it was tough to get small businesses to understand the value of market research and why they should invest in it.

What inspired you to break into your industry? I saw too many companies wanting to extract value from
Black and Brown communities without offering anything of value in return and often not listening to their needs or wants. The companies also lacked the authentic understanding to interact with and engage these communities.

How do you balance your personal and professional life, or have you been able to find a balance?
balance them by understanding the ebb and flow of each. At times, my professional life takes up the majority of space on my calendar while at other times, my personal life fills it. If there’s ever a major conflict, I choose personal – family, friends, self.

What is an inspirational quote that you live by? “Undertake something difficult. It will do you good. Until
you go beyond that which you have already mastered, you will never grow.”

Who were some influential people or mentors that helped or encouraged you along the way? One of
my biggest advocates is Michele Thornton Ghee. She’s supported both of my companies, connected me to her network, and provided guidance and support whenever needed. Also, I’ve been meeting with 3 other women monthly for the last decade. We go by B.R.C.S. (“bricks”), which is an acronym for our names. We discuss business, life, and everything in between.

What are your must-haves to keep your career or business going strong? First, strong and authentic relationships. It keeps the company growing but also creates an environment where I can fully appreciate the work because of who I’m surrounded by and get to work with. Second, breaks/trips. I have to change up my surroundings so I don’t become complacent or comfortable—in my thinking or environment. Being in ever-changing and sometimes uncomfortable situations keeps ideas and perspectives fresh.

What is your definition of a BOSS? Someone with authority, influence, humility, and integrity -- she has
a position of power, knows how to get people to act/respond, knows her voice doesn’t have to be the loudest in the room and can be trusted to do what’s right.
