BOSS Member Spotlight: Shanice Whittaker
Shanice Whittaker (MBA-HRM), founder of Soul Movement Success—a movement for women of color to thrive, lead, and design success. After a decade in HR, I created development, compliance, and community experiences that break barriers, build equity, and empower professionals to step boldly into spaces once thought unreachable.
What were some obstacles that you faced in the beginning process of starting your business or career? In the beginning, splitting my time between a full-time career and building my business with limited resources was overwhelming. When expenses grew and savings shrank, I almost gave up. But I couldn’t forget the version of me stuck in my “conventional” job, successful on paper but disconnected inside. Choosing alignment over comfort wasn’t easy, but it’s been worth it. Every challenge reminds me: I’m building something that reflects my identity.
What inspired you to break into your industry? Sitting at the decision-making table in HR, I saw two truths: I had the skills to solve complex problems—and I saw who kept getting left out. Black and Brown women leaders were often navigating without real support. I couldn’t unsee it. I was driven to fill this gap so that all leaders, especially those from underrepresented communities, have the opportunity to grow in their profession and business without barriers. I decided to build what I wished existed: a space where their success isn’t the exception—it’s the expectation.
How do you balance your personal and professional life, or have you found a balance? Finding a healthier balance between my personal and professional life has been a real journey. I’ve learned that my personal wellbeing isn’t separate from my business—it’s what keeps it thriving. Taking care of my social, emotional, physical, and spiritual needs gives me the energy to pour into my work with intention. Some days, that looks like a long walk with my dog (and company "Pawsitivity Officer"), Prince Louie. Other days, it’s making sure time with friends and family is built right into my schedule. I used to think putting my head down and working nonstop was the best way to grow—but now I know that pausing, being present, and embracing the seasons of life often bring the clarity and creativity I need most.
What is an inspirational quote that you live by? I’m deeply motivated by Audre Lorde’s words: “When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.” That reminder grounds me. It shifts my focus from fear to action—showing me that success isn’t about being fearless; it’s about daring to move forward anyway, fully owning the power I already have.
Who were influential people or mentors who helped or encouraged you? She’ll probably give me a hard time for this, but my younger sister has been the most influential person in this new chapter of my life. She’s witnessed every version of my professional and personal journey, which is why I hold her advice and encouragement so close to my heart. Her support has been invaluable to my growth.
What are your "must-haves" to keep your career or business strong? My non-negotiables are my freedom with my time, snacks, and intentional rest.
What is your definition of a BOSS? A B.O.S.S. is someone who takes BOLD OPPORTUNITIES to SUCCEED and SERVE. An individual who is courageous enough to be the change they want to see in their communities, without hesitation or reservation.
