BOSS Member Spotlight – Dr. Marilyn F. Berchie-Gialamas
Dr. Marilyn F. Berchie-Gialamas, DNP, CRNP, NP-C, CBS, is Executive Director of Trinity Maternal Wellness and an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Morgan State University. She leads community-based programs that support Black mothers and families, blending clinical expertise, research, and advocacy to advance respectful, equitable maternal health throughout Central Maryland.
In the beginning, I was juggling new motherhood, being the primary breadwinner, and building a grassroots nonprofit with almost no savings or staff. I faced burnout, limited funding, and learning how to formalize systems while still personally packing supplies, teaching classes, and showing up for families in crisis.

What were some obstacles that you faced in the beginning process of starting your business or career? What inspired you to break into your industry?
My own pregnancies, birth experiences, and the stories of Black women navigating disrespectful, fragmented care pushed me into this work. As a nurse practitioner and educator, I saw the gap between what families deserved and what they received. I wanted to build a space where mothers feel seen, heard, and supported. How do you balance your personal and professional life, or have you found a balance?
I don’t believe in perfect balance—I live in seasons. Some seasons are heavy with grant deadlines and programs; others are protected for rest and family. I set clearer boundaries now, ask for help, schedule therapy and downtime, and remind myself that I can’t pour into moms from an empty cup. What is an inspirational quote that you live by?
“I am deliberate and afraid of nothing.” – Audre LordeWho were influential people or mentors who helped or encouraged you?
My mother and grandmothers modeled quiet strength and service. My husband has been a steady encourager when things felt overwhelming. Professionally, nursing mentors, community doulas, and fellow Black women leaders have poured into me—reminding me that our work is necessary, even when resources are scarce, and the load feels heavy. What are your "must-haves" to keep your career or business strong?
My must-haves are: a clear mission, community voice at the center, data to show impact, strong partnerships, a supportive team, and protected time for strategy—not just crisis mode. Personally, I rely on faith, therapy, rest, and childcare support so I can show up fully for both my family and my work. What is your definition of a BOSS?
A BOSS is a woman who leads with vision, integrity, and service. She builds tables for others, not just a seat for herself. She makes hard decisions with compassion, honors her boundaries, and uses her influence to create opportunities and healing in her community, especially for those often overlooked. Please describe yourself in two words: Maternal Advocate; Community Builder
