Lakeysha Love is a mother, a wife, and an entrepreneur. She is the founder and owner of Sugar Head LLC, which was established in 2019.
1. What were some obstacles that you faced in the beginning process of starting your business or career?
Some of the challenges I faced in the beginning were securing funding for my business and finding a mentor. I worked hard to build my credit and saved money, but I quickly learned that there is limited to no funding available for Black-owned or Women-owned businesses. Because of this, I was forced to utilize my personal credit and savings to start my business. I also reached out to several individuals for guidance, but I did not receive the support that I was looking for, and I quickly realized I had no choice but to make it happen for myself, so I got to work.
2. What inspired you to break into your industry?
I was inspired to enter this industry because of my entrepreneurial spirit and my genuine love for desserts. Creating desserts has always brought me joy, and I have always believed that desserts have a unique way of making people happy and bringing people together. I was also motivated by the desire to build something of my own, something that reflected my creativity, my hard work, and determination. I really enjoy sharing my desserts and experiences with family, friends, and my community.
3. How do you balance your personal and professional life, or have you found a balance?
It can be extremely difficult at times to balance my personal and professional life, but I have learned that if I do not intentionally make time for myself, I will not be able to show up fully for my family or my business. I make a conscious effort to create structure and set boundaries. I try to be mindful about scheduling time not only for my business responsibilities, but also for my family, my friends, and most importantly, myself.
4. What is an inspirational quote that you live by?
I actual have two quotes I live by.
“If you want something you never had, then you must do something you have never done.”
“You alone are enough, you have nothing to prove to anybody.” (Maya Angelou)
5. Who were influential people or mentors who helped or encouraged you?
My family became the foundation of my support system, and they played a significant role in encouraging me throughout my journey. There were moments when the process felt overwhelming or when I questioned whether I should keep going; they were the ones who reminded me of my purpose and pushed me to stay focused. My family's belief in me gave me the strength to move forward, even during the most challenging times. Although I did not have mentors in the beginning, the unwavering support and encouragement from my family truly shaped my resilience and determination. They helped me stay grounded and motivated, and I’m grateful for the role they played in helping me build and sustain my business.
6. What are your "must-haves" to keep your career or business strong?
My reminder app, selfcare and exercise.
7. What is your definition of a BOSS?
Someone who has an unbelievable faith who works diligently to accomplish their goals and aspirations, no matter what obstacles they face.
