The Genius Zone By Dorothy Enriquez

I love bubbles. I bought a bubble machine once, for a photo shoot. I had loads of fun with it until it broke. I wanted to catch every single bubble that came out of the machine: big ones, small ones, some as big as my head--But there were just too many.  After a while, I got tired. Accomplishing tasks in our business, whether it is a 9 – 5er, our side-hustle or a self-owned-business, it can feel very similar to trying to pop all of the bubbles coming out of the bubble machine. There are too many, how big they will be can’t be pre-determined and there is no way of knowing when it will stop. This is analogous to our laundry list tasks, self-inflicted honey-do lists as well as unexpected fires that need to be extinguished. Covey describes our lives as having four quadrants . He indicates we should spend most of our time in quadrant 2. But, how many of us really do? The DOT-Tributors have gotten this down to a science. We have a system we affectionately call The Genius Zone ...

Go Where the Joy Is By Dorothy Enriquez

Franklin Covey suggests we begin with the end in mind. Will you ‘C’ your way through school or ace your way out? Will wrong relationships lead to a forgotten purpose? Will dreams be abandoned because life got in the way? Is the goal to simply get through life or to leave a legacy? The Pursuit of Happiness We spend the majority of our early adult years looking for happiness. Sometimes, our search begins with innocent and healthy intentions; other times our quest takes unexpected turns toward corks, pills, lighters and maybe even needles. Regardless, we always find ourselves back on the crooked path because happiness is fleeting. We’re happy for a day, a week…a month and then BOOM! Just like that we’re robbed and left for dead on the corner of happiness and sorta kinda. We’re on an endless Odyssey and reaching Homer status because the pursuit of happiness, on some level, is ridiculous. We’re challenged to turn the frown upside down, and so often, we inherently rely upon o...

Daydream on Purpose by Dorothy Enriquez

I bumped into two people before I could withdraw a number from the red dispenser.  The number 16 was displayed on the overhead screen; I pulled 27. Sending packages was a popular pass time for which I never received the memo. Music wasn’t an option. I forgot my headphones. I couldn’t read a magazine; I didn’t pack one in my go-go gadget hand bag. Surfing the inter-web was out of the question due to lack of reception. What was a girl to do? Daydream of course.  I dreamt of the future: I was dressed to conquer the world in cadet blue slacks, a white and blue pin-striped-long-sleeved blouse and metallic-silver-four-inch heels. Large windows traced the entire perimeter of the building. Large gray/blue tiles made the floor appear endless. There wasn’t a cubicle or piece of furniture in sight. Six groups of people stood before me awaiting instructions in the airy and naturally lit office space. Two groups were from my company and the other four were unfamiliar. I lifted b...

Failing Forward - How to Bounce Back in 4 Steps: Recover from Failure with Class and a Smile By Dorothy Enriquez

Image
Have you ever noticed the closer you are to your dreams or goals the more scared you become? Fear of failing is crippling for many people.      Failure  was  one of my biggest fears. As 2012 comes to a close, I realized I've come  face to face with every single type of failure I used to worry about endlessly. My mind constructed the worst case scenario. With every failure I faced, it was never as bad as my imagination had depicted it. I realized there were two things paramount in every failure, mistake and downward spiral: my faith and tenacity. I don’t just fail and roll over. I go kicking and screaming. What does that mean? It means I fail  forward . If I keep getting back up after every fall, I feel like I haven’t  really  failed. I’ve made a mistake. And to err is human.     My dad says throughout the course of life everything that happens, good or bad, has consequences. My job is to learn from every scenario...
