Congratulations on making it this far! Now that you’re about to enter your fourth decade, it’s time to make the most of it.

The idea of reaching 40 years of life can be daunting if you think this means you’re old. The thing is … aging has several advantages and is a privilege, not a hindrance. I’m not sure about you, but for me, 40 has been the best stage of my life thus far. And I’m excited about what’s to come.

Whether you’ve already reached the achievement of turning 40 or the countdown is in progress, here are a few reasons you should embrace all the changes that come with your new place in life.

Reason #1: Milestones

Let’s start by acknowledging the fact you made it to 40! You successfully managed your way through your 20s and 30s and have set yourself up to live well in your 40s. The struggles you went through early on were necessary to be where you are now.

Maturity comes with knowledge and wisdom, so you are a resource for the younger crowd. Look, you’ve earned your stripes, and the information you have to share is valuable.

Reason #2: Coming of Age

Remember how much you thought you knew about life at age 13? And then again at 18? Now, the reality is that whatever stage of life you’re in, you do know more than you did in the last.

While turning 40 seems to be a milestone that many dread, there are genuinely some incredible things to look forward to about “coming of age.” One of the most amazing things is finding your inner peace and realizing that you only get one life, and it’s for LIVING.

Gaining knowledge and experience only makes you more powerful. And coming of age not only means that you’re wiser. It also means that you can empower others through your “been-there-done-that” experience. Also, let’s not forget all the nurturing, love, and compassion you can now give to your inner little girl. She’s been cheering you on during your entire journey, so always make time for “her.”

Reason #3: Self-Acceptance

Your 40s are a time for reflection and appreciation of the progress you’ve made in life. Other people’s opinions of you no longer dictate the moves you make. Your confidence and self-esteem have evolved. You’re a real grown woman who knows what she wants and will not settle for less. You’ve seen a lot of things in life that have shaped your character, and you love the woman you see in the mirror.

Reason #4: Celebrate Yourself

If your big day is on the way, plan something special that makes you feel like the shining star you truly are. This doesn’t need to be an extravagant party where you’re focused on impressing others.

This is your time to focus on the things that make you happy, and you shouldn’t feel selfish for doing so. Celebrating yourself shouldn’t only occur on your birthday, so be sure to schedule a standing appointment in your planner just to celebrate you!

Conclusion

Turning 40, and getting older in general, may feel scary initially, but viewing aging as a positive occurrence will improve your mindset. By appreciating yourself and the work you’ve done to improve your life, you’ll be more inclined to celebrate the beauty of you.

Now is the time to embrace all you have accomplished and all you will achieve in the coming years. This decade brings new milestones, opportunities for self-discovery and growth, and a chance to celebrate yourself just as you are. What are some things you're looking forward to this decade?
