As a business owner moving to the digital space, you may feel intimidated by the companies that are already thriving there.

The question you may ask is “How can my business compete against almost 2 billion websites on the internet?”

Welcome to the world of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - the process of enhancing the quality and quantity of search engine traffic to your website.

When using search engines (like Google), you have probably noticed that most explorers click on the first page of search engine results. This is where SEO comes into play. If your website appears on the first page of search engine results, you are more likely to get more traffic, leads, sales, and revenue.

Generally, search engines work in three steps:

  • Crawling. A method by which search engines search all the internet web pages using software called crawlers and bots. These programs monitor all new links, new web pages, and updates to previously discovered pages.

  • Indexing. In this step, search engines interpret, analyze, and categorize pages before storing them in the index. Search engine indexes are massive databases of all crawled websites, allowing them to appear in search results.

  • Ranking.  Once the crawlers have retrieved data from all the websites in the database, the search engine will categorize the results from most relevant to least relevant, based on the searcher's query.

Those unfamiliar with search engines (crawlers, to be precise) may find it difficult to determine whether something is relevant. The answer is algorithms - they are the guidelines that help you locate the relevant blog or website based on your search.

The updated algorithms keep marketers and entrepreneurs from ranking. Below are key factors to guarantee your website is ranked higher in search engines:

Keyword search remains one of the most consistent factors when it comes to optimizing a website. This process involves identifying and evaluating search terms or phrases that are typed into search engines. This shows which query to target, its popularity, and its ranking difficulty.

✔ On-page optimization (also called on-page SEO). This improves your site's ranking in the top search results. This includes methods to improve the meta description, title tags, content, internal links, website structure, etc.

✔ Link building. This is the process of acquiring trustworthy links that connect to your website. It's important to remember one rule here: quality is more important than the number of links you connect.

The purpose of Search Engine Optimization is to improve your site’s ranking in search engine results. Being on the first page of a search engine does not mean paying customers, but it does for the traffic it brings.
