BOSS Spotlight Feature: Isaro Carter, Esq

Isaro Carter, Esq. is an entertainment & intellectual property attorney and entrepreneur. Based in NYC, she is the Founder and Principal Attorney of The Carter Firm LLC. The Carter Firm helps entrepreneurs and entertainment industry creatives protect their business interests and intellectual property from the ground up.

What were some obstacles that you faced in the beginning process of starting
your business or career?
The biggest obstacle I faced at the very beginning of my career and my business
was overcoming my self-doubt. I’ve since overcome this but in those earlier stages, impostor syndrome had me in a chokehold. I’m thankful for my support
system because they reminded me of all the reasons why I was more than qualified to be an attorney and a business owner, even when I couldn’t see them.

What inspired you to break into your industry?
I’ve always been a fan of the performing arts, even when I was really young. I come from a really talented family but, those talents seem to have skipped over me! That didn’t deter me from loving the performing arts though so, I still consumed every bit of entertainment industry news that I could. Beyond celebrity gossip, I was interested in the business side of things and what deals were going on. In geeking out over that info, I learned so many artists and performers were struggling to make ends meet. This was even after signing with major labels and media companies, and it was rarely ever due to simple money mismanagement. When it came down to it, a lot of these individuals lacked sufficient legal support when making critical decisions, especially early on. I never wanted that to be the case for any of my family members, and it was certainly awful to read that my favorite artists were suffering this fate. This was when I decided that I would dedicate a career to providing legal support for performing artists and other career creatives.

How do you balance your personal and professional life, or have you been
able to find a balance?
I’m a young, unmarried woman with no children so I take advantage of the time afforded to me by going as hard as I can professionally. For now, my biggest
responsibility and favorite pastime is working on in The Carter Firm. To have a semblance of a work/life balance, on admin days, I’ll go to a co-working space to work alongside a loved one if we haven’t seen each other in a long time. I’m also intentional about scheduling a few meals a week in the company of loved ones. I also go to workout classes.

What is an inspirational quote that you live by?
“Don’t assume you have to have some prescribed conditions to do your best work. Do not wait. Work with what you have right now.”
It’s so easy to fall into thinking that things have to be perfect to do something or that you’ll have the motivation to get things done if everything else is perfect (or approaching it). In my experience, that line of thinking makes me hold myself back. This quote gave me the perspective I needed to be able to shed that line of thinking and just get things done.

Who were some influential people or mentors that helped or encouraged you
along the way?
I have so many mentors that I have to thank for giving me the motivation to strike out on my own, especially so soon after leaving law school. The two women that
come to mind immediately are Christina Simpson & Midwin Charles. Ms. Simpson was my alumni mentor in law school and continues to be a trusted mentor to this day. She started her firm, The Law Office of Christina Simpson, Esq. shortly after she graduated from law school and was a representation of what’s possible. The late Midwin Charles was a mentor since I was a college student and was the reason becoming a lawyer was tangible and realistic to me at all. She gave me my first job and gave me the same resources she used to start her firm when I went out on my own as well. The impact these women have had on my life is something that I could never overstate. They are foundational in my having the confidence to have my own law firm and the audacity to believe that it would be a success.
.
What are your must-haves to keep your career or business going strong? My must-haves are caffeine and a morning workout. I need my caffeine for the
energy for these marathon days a morning workout to keep my mind healthy.

What is your definition of a BOSS?
To me, a BOSS is a visionary who is committed to making their dreams come to life even when the path to success isn’t clearly defined.
