What were some obstacles that you faced in the beginning process of starting your business or career? During the early stages of launching my business, I faced some significant challenges. One being, I was fully dedicated to my vision, but not everyone I shared the vision with had the same enthusiasm. The lack of support and business expertise was a real hurdle – I practically started from scratch. Entering this unfamiliar territory was no joke and scary. For many years, I dedicated myself to odd hours and travel assignments, all to infuse vitality into the business. However, it was pure determination that fueled my persistence in bringing my dream to fruition.
What inspired you to break into your industry? My personal journey and passion for maternal health led me to break into the industry. My journey began with me facing a tragic birth experience paired with—an unsettling realization that black women faced disproportionately higher risks during pregnancy and childbirth. I was a call to action, so I broke into the maternal industry to create a change.
How do you balance your personal and professional life, or have you been able to find a balance? Finding that perfect balance between my personal and professional life has been quite a journey. Honestly, it's a bit of a challenge, especially since I'm in the exciting building phase of my business. I believe these early days require a lot of dedication. However, I've embraced a "work hard, play hard" mindset. When I'm in work mode, I'm all in, and when it's time to unwind, I make sure to really enjoy those moments. It's a constant effort, but I'm committed to making it work.
What is an inspirational quote that you live by? Proverbs 31:25-26 - “She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.” I love this scripture because it reminds me that there is nothing that I need to be afraid of and everything I need is provided for me.
Who were some influential people or mentors who helped or encouraged you along the way? My family and friends have been a tremendous source of encouragement and support throughout my journey. Even though they might not have business expertise, their love, and unwavering backing have meant the world to me. Their unique way of showing support has been a constant reminder that I'm not alone in this venture.
What are your "must-haves" to keep your career or business going strong? My “must-haves” would have to be sufficient capital, a growth-oriented mindset, and a genuine passion for connecting with people. Money is a fundamental resource and maintaining a mindset open to learning and development is crucial. Moreover, an authentic love for connecting with my clients fuels my drive to thrive.
What is your definition of a BOSS? A boss is me – someone who goes after precisely what she wants and doesn't let anything stand in her way. Someone who might not have all the answers, yet they're consistently connecting the dots and constructing something greater than themselves.
