BOSS Member Spotlight: Dhomonique Murphy

Dhomonique Murphy, a 3x Emmy® Award-Winning storyteller, is the visionary Founder of The Right Method™ LLC, a distinguished and nationally certified WOSB, WBE organization that has been a leader in branding, marketing, video production, and public relations for corporate and government agencies. Her organization specializes in transformative storytelling with an emphasis on diverse narratives that shape organizational success.

What were some obstacles that you faced in the beginning process of starting your business or career? In the beginning phases of my career, I encountered the familiar feeling of imposter syndrome, where doubts about my abilities and qualifications crept in. It was challenging to navigate through these uncertainties while trying to establish myself in a new venture. Starting something from scratch comes with its own set of anxieties and insecurities, especially when you're constantly questioning if you're on the right path or if you have what it takes to succeed.

One of the key hurdles I faced was the need to find the right mentors and surround myself with the right people who could provide guidance and support. Identifying individuals who had walked similar paths and learning from their experiences was instrumental in gaining clarity and confidence in my own journey.

Moreover, I realized the importance of patience and perseverance. In a world that often values quick results and instant gratification, understanding that meaningful achievements take time to materialize was a valuable lesson. Learning to embrace the journey, with all its ups and downs, and trusting in the process became essential aspects of my entrepreneurial endeavor.

Overall, overcoming these obstacles taught me the importance of resilience, self-belief, and the power of a strong support network in navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship and career development.

What inspired you to break into your industry? What inspired me to break into the media industry was a lifelong passion for storytelling and connecting with people. From a young age, I dreamed of a career where I could share captivating narratives and explore the world through different perspectives. At just 14 years old, I was given an incredible opportunity to audition for a locally produced NBC TV show in Minneapolis, where I grew up. Being selected as a TV host for that show set the trajectory for my career in media.

Since then, I've immersed myself in journalism programs nationwide, honing my craft and expanding my skills. Along the way, I've been fortunate to receive recognition for my work, including three Emmy Awards and the National Association of Black Journalists' Salute to Excellence Award. Additionally, being crowned Mrs. Virginia American in 2020 was a testament to my dedication and passion for making an impact.

As a national TV contributor, I've had the privilege of appearing on esteemed shows such as the Steve Harvey Show, Today Show, Cheddar, Hoda & Jenna, ABC, FOX, NBC, Sesame Street, Essence Festival, and more.

As the CEO of The Right Method, I lead a dynamic team dedicated to branding, marketing, video production, and public relations. While my TV appearances are part of my journey, my focus remains on leveraging media as a platform for storytelling and positive change.

How do you balance your personal and professional life, or have you been able to find a balance? Well, let me tell you, balancing personal and professional life is like walking a tightrope without a safety net. It's tricky, and there's no magic formula for it. As a wife, a mom of two energetic boys (ages 4 and 5), and a CEO, my days are jam-packed. Some days, I feel like I'm running on fumes, but I've learned to embrace the chaos. It's about making time for what truly matters and being present in those moments. Building a business while raising kids? It's no joke. But here's the thing - I involve my children in my business journey. They're part of the team. We have monthly financial meetings where they learn about budgets and revenue streams. They get to see firsthand how the magic happens on the post-production floor. It's not always easy, but it's worth it.

What is an inspirational quote that you live by? One quote that has truly shaped my mindset is "Don't Chase Money, Chase Excellence." These words, spoken by my dear friend and the founder of Priceline.com, Jeff Hoffman, have had a profound impact on me. It's a reminder to focus on doing excellent work, to constantly strive for improvement, and to let success follow as a natural consequence of that dedication. Instead of being driven solely by financial gain, I'm driven by the pursuit of excellence in everything I do. This mindset shift has not only transformed my approach to business but has also enriched my personal life, guiding me to prioritize passion and purpose above all else.

Who were some influential people or mentors who helped or encouraged you along the way? Throughout my journey, I've been fortunate to have incredible mentors and supporters who have played pivotal roles in my success. Firstly, my husband, Frank, has been my rock and biggest cheerleader, ensuring our family thrives while I pursue my entrepreneurial endeavors. His unwavering support and proactive approach to balancing family and business have been instrumental in keeping me grounded and focused.

My children have also been invaluable teachers, showing me the importance of presence, compassion, and patience. They've taught me life's most profound lessons, guiding me to prioritize what truly matters in both business and personal life.

Jeff Hoffman, the visionary behind Priceline.com, has been a guiding light in my entrepreneurial journey. His journey from humble beginnings to industry icon inspires me daily. Jeff's passion, focus, and unwavering commitment to excellence resonate deeply with me, and I'm grateful for his mentorship and friendship as I continue to pursue my mission aligned with his principles.

What are your "must-haves" to keep your career or business going strong? To keep my career or business thriving, I prioritize several essential elements:

  1. A Supportive Network: I keep my circle small but strong, surrounding myself with individuals who uplift and inspire me.

  2. Faith: With God, all things are possible. Trusting in the journey and knowing I'm not alone fuels my resilience.

  3. Self-Care: Investing time in myself is non-negotiable. Without self-care, burnout becomes a real risk.

  4. A Strong Mind: Resilience is key. Turning setbacks into stepping stones and withstanding pressure are vital for success.

  5. Focus: Maintaining laser-sharp focus is essential for navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship.

  6. Sense of Humor: Learning to laugh at myself keeps me grounded and resilient in the face of adversity.

  7. Humility: Staying humble opens doors to learning and growth, attracting opportunities and meaningful connections.

  8. Great People: Hiring individuals who embody the mission and vision of my company is paramount.

  9. Automation, Outsourcing, Systems, and Processes: Implementing efficient workflows and leveraging technology streamlines operations and drives growth.

  10. Grace: Rome wasn't built in a day. Balancing ambition with self-compassion allows for both progress and celebration along the way.

What is your definition of a BOSS? A boss, to me, is a beacon of strength and grace, a guiding light in times of darkness. They lead with wisdom, compassion, and unwavering determination, lifting others as they climb. A boss is not defined by authority but by their ability to inspire greatness in those around them.
