BOSS Member Spotlight Feature: Dr. Bisa

Dr. Bisa Batten Lewis is the heart and mind behind #ThePAIDeducator Movement. She is a best-selling author, renowned public speaker, philanthropist, and successful serial entrepreneur. Dr. Bisa wields her rich educational background to enlighten current and aspiring entrepreneurs on using skills they’ve already honed to increase their income.

What were some obstacles that you faced in the beginning process of starting your business or career? When I started my first company in 2000, my ideas were challenging to manifest due to the limits of existing technology. Cloud computing was not yet available to the general public, so I invested tens of thousands of my personal dollars in product development, graphic designing, CD-ROM creation, file storage, and transfer. I am incredibly grateful for advancements in technology! While modern technology, such as digital media and artificial intelligence (AI), sets a higher standard for customer attraction, engagement, and retention, my companies operate, produce, and deliver products and services far more efficiently.

What inspired you to break into your industry? Acknowledging my gift for motivating others as a young adult, I wanted to be a good role model. Whenever I could solve a problem, I was eager to show others how to do the same. Each of my companies is rooted in talents I’ve employed to meet a need, primarily for education and empowerment. While I’ve been an educator in some capacity for over three decades, the majority of my teaching has NOT taken place in a classroom. My products enable me to engage audiences in self-discovery and empowerment on global stages and in books.

How do you balance your personal and professional life, or have you found a balance? Faith, family, career, and fun are essential to me in that order. I seek harmony amongst the four by color-coding my calendar, ensuring a balance between what I must and want to do. I label my daily lunch hour as “Lunch/Workout” on my calendar to ensure I take a break, eat and exercise. If it’s on my calendar, I usually get it done.

What is an inspirational quote that you live by? As a reminder of the significance and necessity of educators in every career, I remain inspired by the quote: “Teachers make all other professions possible.”

Who were influential people or mentors who helped or encouraged you? While my most significant influence in business has been my mom, who encouraged my sister and me to be innovative by building an above-average life and career, my teachers and college professors showed me how - personally and professionally.

What are your "must-haves" to keep your career or business strong? Professionally, I must have quality and talented support staff. In addition to my committed relationship with God, I must have spa services every 7-10 days. My favorites are hot stone pedicures, infrared sauna sessions, foot reflexology, and Korean body scrubs - “seshin.”

What is your definition of a BOSS? I define a BOSS as an individual who recognizes her gift, knows how to optimize it, and encourages others to do the same.

Please describe yourself in two words, "Portfolio Entrepreneur"
