BOSS Member Spotlight: Chari N. Herron
Chari N. Herron is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Clinical Supervisor in the State of Alabama. She is the owner of Divine Restoration Counseling and Consultation, a private counseling practice where she offers counseling and biblical guidance to empower, edify, and encourage healing to clients.
1. What were some obstacles that you faced in the beginning process of starting your business or career?
I had no experience in launching a business and found it difficult navigating administrative tasks with my clinical tasks. I also had to learn and understand how to effectively run and maintain a successful business by gaining knowledge in several areas like operations and marketing. I knew how to counsel people. Running a business was well out of my wheelhouse.
2. What inspired you to break into your industry?
There is a lack of cultural representation of clinicians in the field of counseling. Also, because of the stigma of mental illness and the importance of the church in minority populations, less minorities are seeking counseling and using spiritual bypass as a reasoning. I wanted to become an outlet and resource for minority populations to utilize, providing a safe space for clients to feel relaxed discussing cultural and spiritual issues significant to minority populations, with the comfort of knowing their clinician understands their point of view.
3. How do you balance your personal and professional life, or have you found a balance?
I achieve balance by prioritizing things that bring replenishment and joy like hiking, getting adequate rest, making space for downtime and moments of silence, and spending time with loved ones. I’ve also established clear boundaries with both clients and myself to ensure a healthy separation between work and personal time.
4. What is an inspirational quote that you live by?
"You were created on purpose. You are exactly who and where you need to be, with all the power you need to take your next steps forward. Accept yourself as you are and make any changes in your life based on your discoveries of what is best for you, what nourishes you and celebrates God through you." Susan L. Taylor
5. Who were influential people or mentors who helped or encouraged you?
My family and friends have been such wonderful support to me during my entire journey as a counselor and business owner, whether it’s been praying for me, offering a helping hand, investing in my business, referring/recommending me to people for services, offering words of encouragement, etc. My business mentor Calvin Mitchell and his wife Britt, who also happens to be my sorority sister, have been an absolute Godsend to me professionally and personally. I’ve been blessed to have wonderful counseling mentors along the way, specifically Iantha Calloway, Lucy Douglas, and Ashley Jones, who have helped shape me into the clinician I am today.
6. What are your "must-haves" to keep your career or business strong?
My administrative assistant is essential to the efficiency of my business. Without her, I would never call clients back! My calendar also keeps me afloat and lets me know where I need to be when.
7. What is your definition of a BOSS?
A BOSS is someone who displays strength and moves through life with confidence, purpose, and grace. She leads with integrity, lifts others as she climbs, and faces challenges head-on, turning obstacles into opportunities. A BOSS embodies softness, balancing ambition with compassion. She knows her worth, demands respect, and unapologetically takes up space in every room she enters.
8. Please describe yourself in two words, “Healing Partner”
