BOSS Member Spotlight: Tammecia Smith
Tammecia Smith has dedicated 17 years to the death care industry and owns Melanated Memorials, a diverse line of headstones and monuments featuring African American angels. She’s dedicated to transforming the memorial industry by offering high-quality and affordable memorials that honor memories while celebrating diversity.
What were some obstacles that you faced in the beginning process of starting your business or career? Trying to find vendors willing to design and create these custom memorials. The method of conveying to vendors what dictates “African American” features is more complicated than you’d think, especially for those who haven’t been around us.
What inspired you to break into your industry? While assisting families with their cemetery selections and memorial design, it was common for families to skip over the section in the design book with religious figures. They all looked Caucasian. I realized there was a need for inclusion within the monument industry.
How do you balance your personal and professional life, or have you found a balance? Balance? What’s that? My business is still in its infancy, and I still work full-time. There are definitely a lot of late nights and early mornings! I do, however, make time for myself to maintain my peace of mind. Sometimes you just have to turn the world off and sit in silence.
What inspirational quote do you live by? "Purpose over Profit." I understand that to run a business, you need to make money. However, I don’t think that should be the main goal. Sometimes, the act of helping someone in need takes precedence over making a dollar, and if everyone could understand that concept, the world would be a better place. Success isn’t just measured in dollars but in the lives you touch and the comfort you bring.
Who were influential people or mentors who helped or encouraged you? My closest friends have been a constant source of encouragement, pushing me to keep moving forward. I’ve been blessed to have people who believe in my vision and have helped me bring it to life. I’ve also been fortunate to find other African American monument dealers who generously share their advice and guidance.
What are your "must-haves" to keep your career or business strong? My notebook, my journal, and my Google calendar!
What is your definition of a BOSS? A BOSS just keeps going, even when exhaustion sets in. When fear tries to hold you back, faith propels you forward, because in the end, what’s the worst that can happen? The rewards of the journey far outweigh the comfort of never having tried at all.
Please describe yourself in two words: "Divinely Inspired"
