BOSS Member Spotlight: Marcia Cox
Marcia Cox founded Kaldi’s Coffeehouse & Roastery in Charlotte, North Carolina, a Black-owned specialty coffee brand. Kaldi’s focuses on intentional roasting, community connection, and creative collaborations that bring people together through quality coffee, culture, and shared experiences.
What were some obstacles that you faced in the beginning process of starting your business or career? One of the biggest obstacles was learning everything on my own with limited resources. I was self-taught in roasting, sourcing, and operations while also figuring out branding, pricing, and scaling. Building credibility in a crowded coffee space and gaining access to capital were also early challenges.
What inspired you to break into your industry? I was inspired by the lack of representation I saw in specialty coffee and the desire to create a brand that felt welcoming and community-centered. Coffee has always been a connector, and I wanted to build something that brought people together while telling a story and honoring culture.
How do you balance your personal and professional life, or have you found a balance? Balance is still a work in progress. I have learned to be more intentional with my time, set boundaries when possible, and give myself grace. Owning a business requires flexibility, but rest and support are just as important as hustle.
What is an inspirational quote that you live by? “Everything you want is on the other side of consistency.”
Who were influential people or mentors who helped or encouraged you? Other Black women entrepreneurs have been incredibly influential, especially those who are willing to share their knowledge and offer encouragement. Programs, grants, and community spaces that support small businesses have also played a major role in helping me stay focused and confident.
What are your must-haves to keep your career or business strong?
Consistency, community, quality, and adaptability. Staying connected to customers, being open to collaboration, and always prioritizing the product are key. I also believe in continuous learning and reinvesting in the business.
What is your definition of a BOSS? A BOSS is someone who leads with purpose, creates opportunities for others, and remains committed to growth even when the path is challenging. It is about ownership, accountability, and impact.
