What Is Executive Presence, Really? More Than a Look, Less Than a Superpower By D. Gray-Young, PCC
If you survived or avoided the anti-DEI onslaught that decimated the ranks of professional women, know this: Executive Presence still matters.
Executive Presence is one of those terms that gets thrown around in performance reviews, leadership programs, and feedback conversations, as though it means something specific. But if you ask people for a definition, you’re likely to get some tap dancing.
But what does it actually mean?
Spoiler: It’s Not Just How You Look or Sound
Yes, appearance and communication play an important role. But executive presence isn’t exactly about how you dress. It’s not about charisma in the traditional, extroverted, “lights up a room” kind of way, either
At its core, executive presence is about how others experience your leadership
It’s how you show up, especially in high-stakes, high-pressure situations.
It’s how you make decisions, especially under pressure.
It’s how you communicate when you don’t have all the answers.
The Three Dimensions of Executive Presence
There are many models of Executive Presence. Some are useful, some are loaded with bias. With my clients, I use a simplified, practical lens based on what actually yields results.
1. Gravitas
Put plainly, how people think about you when they hear your name
Your ability to project calm confidence, especially in moments of tension.
Do people feel steady when you're at the helm? Do they trust your judgment?
2. Communication
Your ability to speak clearly, concisely, and with purpose.
Can you read the room, listen well, and land your message without over-talking?
3. Alignment
Are your words, actions, and presence consistent with the level you’re operating at or aspiring to?
Do you understand and reflect the culture you’re in, without losing yourself in the process?
The Myths of Executive Presence
Myth #1: “It’s just code for fitting in.”
True: This is not so much a myth as it is the most common excuse used to mask unfairness and bias. That’s why it’s important to define and develop it intentionally, with context and integrity.
Myth #2: “You either have it, or you don’t.”
Wrong! Executive presence is not some mystical aura you were born with. It’s a skill set; a blend of strategic communication, grounded confidence, emotional regulation, and situational awareness. It’s not a switch you flip. It’s a presence you build over time, not overnight. All of these are learnable and coachable.
Myth #3: “You have to be the loudest voice in the room.”
Reality: Executive presence is about reading the room, asking a question that shifts the energy, naming what others are avoiding, or simply choosing the exact right moment to speak. In fact, some of the most powerful people in the room are the ones who don’t say much. But when they do, everyone listens.
You get to define EP for yourself. intentionally with context and integrity. Executive presence done right isn’t about erasure or becoming someone else. It’s about ensuring the power of who you are lands in the room you're in.
