BOSS Member Spotlight: Jackie Adams

Jackie Adams is a Detroit native and 22-year fashion entrepreneur who built Melodrama through resilience and “human capital.” A Physics graduate turned retail buyer, she now leads Melodrama 2.0, empowering women and small businesses through style, community partnerships, and her journey from fear to faith.

What are some of the obstacles you face in the beginning of the process of starting your business or career?

Obstacles for me starting Melodrama Boutique were finding the right location and getting the capital needed to start the business. I always tell people I started my business on human capital, meaning I used the 20-plus years of retail experience from working sales in high school to management in corporate retail, and ultimately became the buyer for 12 stores and opened Melodrama in 2002.

What inspired you to break into your industry?

I have been in love with fashion since I was a little girl, and was inspired by my grandmother and her morning ritual for work or church; she always did it. It was style and class and grace. It was natural for me, and I have a love for people and community, which was instilled in me by my church upbringing. Fashion is my passion, and I enjoy changing lives one dress at a time.

How do you balance your personal life with your professional life, or have you found a balance?

Balance is tricky, and I find time management to be the key, at least creating some balance. How you schedule work and family can differ for business owners, but I do it intentionally with family dinners and cookouts I host at home. And to take short road trips for personal self-care. Prioritize the small things so big things don’t kill you. The big thing is to write it down and only accomplish the possible each day.

What is an inspirational quote that you live by?

Treat people you want to be treated by and live your life with gratitude!

Who were inspirational people or mentors who helped or encouraged you?

Influential people in my life were my high school teachers, who were very fashionable and encouraged me to major in fashion, but I got a degree in physics. Mom didn’t allow me to go to New York, but I am happy fashion, like I said, has been a natural space for me to create and grow. Then in retail, I worked with amazing upper management that trained me and taught me the importance of customer service and how to understand the shape of a woman's body and close a sale based on product knowledge and supporting the woman in that one moment as though she was the only person in the room.

What are your “must-haves” to keep your career or business strong?

My “must-haves “are a great team and staff to grow with. Now, with social media and online, you need to have a team that keeps all content and information on brand and related to the client. Daily prayer is important to me because it’s by his grace and glory that I was able to be in business for over 20 years. Prayer is sustainable for the mind and spirit when in business, and helps you understand the guidance and living on purpose, not for profit.

What is your definition of being a BOSS?

Being a boss to me is knowing how to build and support a team. People confuse being a boss with running the show or business. Being the boss, you know how to delegate and accomplish true success by trusting others with your vision.
