BOSS Founder: Building Community in Challenging Times by Dr. Cameka Smith

Speaker, investor, and award-winning entrepreneur - these are just a few words that describe Dr. Cameka Smith, Founder of The BOSS Network, a community of professional and entrepreneurial women who support each other through conversation, online engagement, and event-based networking. Working towards one
simple goal, BOSS® is “Bringing Out Successful Sisters” to promote and encourage the small business spirit and professional development of women.

There’s something powerful about being in a room—or even a virtual space—where women truly see you. Not just for what you do, but for who you are becoming. That has always been the heart behind The BOSS Network.

When I started this community, I wasn’t simply building a platform. I was building the kind of ecosystem I knew so many women of color needed—one rooted in access, collaboration, mentorship, and authentic connection. Community building is not about collecting followers or filling seats at events. It’s about creating spaces where people feel supported enough to grow, courageous enough to dream bigger, and connected enough to know they don’t have to navigate success alone.

In my recent feature with ESSENCE, I shared how important it is for us to continue investing in women entrepreneurs and creating pathways for opportunity, especially for Black women who are often overlooked when it comes to funding, mentorship, and visibility. Through initiatives like the BOSS Impact Fund, BOSS Business University, and our partnerships with organizations that believe in equity and innovation, we are proving what happens when community and purpose align. (Essence)

One thing I’ve learned over the years is this: relationships are still the currency of growth. The right introduction can change a business. The right mentor can shift a mindset. The right community can transform a woman’s confidence and trajectory forever.

In challenging times, building community matters more than ever. A few things I’ve learned:

• Lead with authenticity and empathy
• Support and collaborate instead of competing
• Create spaces where people feel heard, valued, and connected
• Be intentional about sharing resources and opportunities

As we continue building together, I encourage you to think about the communities you’re nurturing in your own life and business. Are you creating spaces that inspire collaboration over competition? Are you intentionally pouring into others while also allowing yourself to receive support?

The future of entrepreneurship and leadership will not be built in isolation. It will be built through intentional communities that open doors, share knowledge, and create opportunities for the next generation of women leaders.

Thank you for being part of this journey with us. We’re not just building businesses—we’re building legacy, impact, and a powerful community of women who continue to rise together.

With gratitude,

Cameka Smith
