We Are Inspired By This BOSS: Oprah Winfrey

Image
American television host, actress, producer, philanthropist. Oprah Gail Winfrey was born January 29, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi. After a troubled adolescence in a small farming community, where she was sexually abused by a number of male relatives and friends of her mother, Vernita, she moved to Nashville to live with her father, Vernon, a barber and businessman. She entered Tennessee State University in 1971 and began working in radio and television broadcasting. In 1976, Winfrey moved to Baltimore, where she hosted the TV chat show, People Are Talking . The show became a hit and Winfrey stayed with it for eight years, after which she was recruited by a Chicago TV station to host her own morning show, A.M. Chicago . Her major competitor in the time slot was Phil Donahue . Within several months, Winfrey's open, warm-hearted personal style had won her 100,000 more viewers than Donahue and had taken her show from last place to first in the ratings. Her success led ...

BOSS Member Spotlight Rachel Green-Walker

Image
Photo by Mike Jue So you might ask, what made me join the BOSS Network? From the moment founder Cameka Smith introduced me to the BOSS Network, I was instantly moved, inspired and eager to learn more. Her words spoke to me, I felt her cause, and knew immediately I had to be a part of this amazing organization. Since joining the organization a year ago, I have been blessed with the opportunity to meet numerous like-minded women whom I consider to be trailblazers in their area of expertise. From near and far, this wonderful group of powerful women has given so much to me. Their advice, stories, referrals, hugs, and of course words of encouragement all embody true sisterhood! I enjoy being apart of BOSS because we work together as a team to strengthen each other’s goals and pay it forward with out expectations. I help my sister because she needs it, not because I need something from her.  One of my favorite books said it best when it read, “ Give generously to them and do so wi...

Plan On It by BOSS Member Anika Kai Jackson

Image
Plan On It! My name is Anika Kai Jackson and  I am the owner of AnikaKai Events a full service event planning company  based out of the Chicago-land area.  Most people assume my last name is Kai because ever since I was a little girl, EVERYONE (no matter who it was) always combined the two so it came out as one name simply “AnikaKai” J .  In 2005 my company was birthed but I am certain that it was conceived when I was around 5 years old.  This is when I remember my mother planning what I thought to be the most elaborate events.  She did everything from our families’ holiday parties to weddings and corporate events; not as a profession but just as something she loved.  Little did she know that as I watched her the seed for planning and creating was being planted in me.  It is 2010 and my mother has been gone for 16 years now and with every event I plan, I know that there is a part of her that my clients are getting the part of her that was passion...
