Professional Style: 10 Hot Tips By Kim Turner

Image
I love sharing my style advice with ladies who are making it happen. Sometimes you are working so hard to heat things up that you forget to cool down and that's not good because you never want to let them see you sweat. So whether it is weather, body changes or you are simply just making sparks fly with your moves, here are 10 tips keep you professionally “cool” while you are hot:    1. Go Au Naturale:  Wear natural fabrics.   Apparel made out of cotton, linen, and even lightweight wools, is breathable and will keep you cooler than most man made fabrics. 2. Keep it Light:  Wear lighter colors.  Try a tan or other light color suit.  These colors will keep you cooler than their darker counterparts.  Darker colors absorb the light from the sun. 3. Don't Button Up:  Don't put on your suit jacket (or tie, men) until you get to the office; especially if you use public transportation.  You never know how well or  if ...

Honor Your Power By Melissa Kimble

What's easier - saying something positive or wallowing in negativity? Surrounding yourself with encouraging people or going back to the same people who bring you down? Chasing your own passions and purposes or choosing to put everybody else before your own well being? As women, we tend to feel that the more weight we carry, the "stronger" and more "important" we may feel. But, what we don't often see is that the weight we've become accustomed to carrying is also dead weight. And while we like to think that we're simply helping or saving others, we're really losing ourselves. What are you honoring with your actions? Inside of each of us, is a power that lies dormant - ready to be activated by our faith, passions, purposes, and believes. Each time we don't answer to our calling or allow others to pull us away from who we are, we loose a piece of that power. We must each make the conscious decision that we will use our power to not onl...

Why I Took the Risk….Again Dr.Kamala Uzzell, Ph.D, LPC, NCC, DCC, ACS

Taking risks and exploring uncharted territory can be frightening.  But, I believe that if you have a dream and a true passion for something, you shouldn't let fear stand in your way.  You should pursue your passion at most costs.  You’ll never know what can be unless you try.  So, be bold, be courageous and TAKE RISKS.   When you take a risk, there’s a chance that things won’t work out as you planned.  There’s a chance that you may “fail”.  That fear of failing is often what keeps a person from taking risks.  What sets a person apart from everyone else is often the fact that they took a risk, an educated risk, and succeeded.  Educated risks consist of great preparation and are best utilized when preparation meets opportunity.  Here is my personal story of taking a huge risk, actually two risks, in my career: The first risk was when I opened a private practice during my first year of a Ph.D. program in Counse...

Be the CEO of Your Finances By Harrine Freeman

Image
Women earn approximately $.74 for every dollar a man earns and pay over $426 billion a year on hair, nails, toiletries, and beauty products. Women pay more than men for services such as hair salon, dry cleaning, insurance, housing and healthcare. Unfortunately there is no federal law banning gender pricing which varies by state to state. Earning less money and mishandling their finances puts women at risk for financial failure.  If you mismanage your finances these bad habits can carry over in other areas of your life. When your finances are out of balance so are other areas of your life such as your career, relationships, family and health. Managing your finances properly requires discipline, attention to detail, organization skills, strategic planning, sacrifice, and logic skills. These skills are also useful in other areas of your life. Being the CEO of your finances reduces stress, anxiety, sadness, frustration and anger and helps keep your life in balance. Since ...

How to Work Smarter in Social Media By Ruby Veridiano

Image
I’m sure all of us feel frustrated or overwhelmed when it comes to managing all our social media platforms. There are a billion people online, and sometimes, it can feel pointless to try and insert ourselves into a million other conversations. But lately, I’ve been introduced to a few tricks, and I’d like to share them with you. TWITTER: The key to all social media platforms in engagement, but the key is to engage with the right people. To do that, organize your Twitter contacts into “lists” and categorize them. That way, you can hone and target right into your chosen peer group instead of having to filter through all the incessant chatter in your Twitterverse. For example, create a list of “female entrepreneurs” or “fashionistas” and you can drop your favorite figures in those categories right in. When you access your list, you’ll know exactly what kind of conversation your entering, and the kind of people you want to hear from. Then you can tweet away- to the right peop...

King Bey’s School of Business: Lessons from “Life Is But A Dream” By Brittany Applegate

If you tuned into Beyonce’s documentary “Life Is But A Dream” on Saturday, February 4, you saw the many faces of King Bey. Aside from learning about Beyonce, the musician, wife, and mother; we saw Beyonce, the businesswoman. Beyonce taught many lessons throughout her documentary. From making the decision to part from her father’s management, to having tough skin while handling business; Beyonce took us to class. Check out the top 3 lessons I learned from King Bey’s School of Business. Lesson 1: No Skirts In The Boardroom “I think I realized that business and being polite, doesn't match. You can be fair but me being polite was not me being fair to myself. Now, I’m learning how political things are and a lot of the crazy things [my father did] was necessary.” When you have important decisions to make, deadlines to meet, and products to release, the last thing you want to do is be polite. When handling business, being polite can put you in a position to be taken ad...

Fear of Success: The Real Reason You Fall Short of Your Dreams By Lakara Foster

Image
Everyone has heard of the dreaded “fear of failure” and how it is usually described as one of the main reasons why people will not after go after their dreams. But I believe an equally terrifying culprit that causes dream deterrence is “fear of success”.  While much has been written on the topic of overcoming the fear of failing, discovering how to conquer this irrational fear of success has not been an easy journey. I have come up with three steps that serve as my personal testimony for creating a life worth living. Three steps to getting over your fear of success… 1. Decide you Deserve It: One of the most difficult things to do when it comes to success is to decide that you deserve it. Deeming ourselves worthy is a very difficult task for most women especially when we rely on most of our validation from outside sources.  These sources usually dictate how we should feel about our weight, our hair, our style of dress, and what we feel we deserve in life.  T...
